Whether Wire-Haired, Smooth-Haired or Long-Haired Dachshund, Jack Russell Terrier, Parson Russell Terrier, German Hunting Terrier, Fox Terrier or Westphalian Dachsbracke — small hunting breeds are among the most versatile and determined working dogs in the field.
They work underground, move confidently through dense cover and often reach places where larger dogs simply cannot. These particular working conditions place very specific demands on a collar: it needs to be compact and lightweight, yet robust enough to withstand regular contact with earth, roots and thick undergrowth.
It is precisely with these requirements in mind that we developed our collection of leather collars for small hunting dogs.
For compact hunting breeds such as Dachshunds, Jack Russell Terriers and Fox Terriers, the proportions of a collar matter.
A collar that is unnecessarily wide or heavy can feel cumbersome on a smaller dog and may restrict freedom of movement when working through dense cover or underground. With a width of 2 to 2.5 cm, these collars provide a secure and comfortable fit without adding unnecessary bulk — allowing your dog to move freely whether working in woodland, open country or below ground.
Our collars for small hunting dogs are crafted from vegetable-tanned oiled leather. Naturally supple yet remarkably resilient, this leather is well suited to dogs that regularly encounter moisture, mud and rough terrain.
For Dachshunds and Terriers working through wet undergrowth, earth dens or muddy tracks, the combination of durability, flexibility and comfort makes oiled leather an excellent choice. Its supple character also provides a comfortable surface against the neck — particularly important for short-haired dogs where the collar sits directly against the coat and skin.
No two dogs are quite alike. Wire-Haired, Long-Haired and Smooth-Haired Dachshunds differ not only in their coats, but individual dogs may also vary considerably in sensitivity around the neck.
For dogs that benefit from a softer feel, we offer padded collars designed to distribute pressure comfortably and provide additional cushioning.
If you prefer a particularly slim and lightweight collar — for example for a Jack Russell Terrier or Fox Terrier working regularly in dense cover and rough terrain — an unpadded version retains the full strength of the oiled leather while keeping the construction beautifully streamlined.
Both options are designed with everyday field use in mind.
Every collar in this collection is individually handcrafted in our Hamburg workshop.
From cutting and finishing the leather to fitting the hardware, each stage is completed with careful attention to detail. For small hunting dogs whose collars regularly come into contact with earth, moisture and undergrowth, thoughtful construction and precise craftsmanship make a genuine difference to durability.
Choose the hardware that best suits your preferred aesthetic and intended use:
In dense undergrowth, underground or simply out and about, small and agile hunting dogs such as Dachshunds and Jack Russell Terriers can disappear from sight remarkably quickly.
A personalised laser engraving with your dog’s name, your contact details or both adds a practical element of identification while making each collar distinctly individual.
This collection has been designed specifically with small, compact hunting and working breeds in mind, including:
Whether working underground, moving through dense cover or accompanying you in everyday life, these leather collars combine the resilience a small hunting dog needs in the field with the lightweight, comfortable fit their compact build deserves.
