Tracking leash in brown oiled leather with an orange signal end

Take the leash in your hand once and you feel why oiled leather is the choice for tracking work: the surface is soft and slightly greasy, the leather runs through the hand without twisting and lies flat on the ground. Brown is the colour that does not stand out in leaf litter and old timber — which is exactly why the last two metres are orange.

The leash is made from 4 mm oiled leather, combination-tanned, and stitched by hand. You choose the width — 1 cm or 1.5 cm — and the length with 10, 12 or 15 metres. The fittings are brass. Made in Hamburg.

The leash is made for blood tracking and trailing with one dog. On a search through autumn broadleaf woodland you work among browns and reds — a brown leash on the ground is hard to find again there, an orange end is immediate.

Two-metre signal end — the last section is dyed orange through and is the only part you still see from a distance in leaf litter.

Hand stitching — the seam is set by hand and can be restitched section by section instead of replacing the whole leash.

Oiled leather, 4 mm — dyed brown through and greased – it takes up moisture more slowly and stays supple.

Brass fittings — brass does not rust and darkens over time – polish it if you prefer it bright.

Two widths, three lengths — 1 cm or 1.5 cm, with 10, 12 or 15 metres, depending on terrain and glove size.

The leash is stitched by hand in our Hamburg workshop, not on a machine. That is why we can offer repairs: a hand seam can be opened and set again.

Care for it with leather grease. After a wet track it dries at room temperature, not on a radiator. Brown oiled leather darkens over time and takes on a slight sheen where you grip it — which shows you exactly where your hands go.

Unsure about the choice? Write to us with the dog you work and how dense your ground is. In broadleaf woodland with heavy cover we tend to suggest 12 metres rather than 15 — these are reference points, not rules, and we are glad to go through it with you.

Which width should I choose — 1 cm or 1.5 cm?

1 cm sits lighter in the hand, 1.5 cm gives you more surface to grip. If you work with gloves in autumn and winter, the wider version is the more comfortable one. As a reference point: up to around 20 kg of dog 1 cm, above that 1.5 cm.

What length do I need for tracking work?

10 metres are enough in dense stands where you have to keep the dog close. 12 metres are the usual compromise. 15 metres are for open ground and long, cold tracks. If you only want to buy one leash, take 12 metres.

What is the signal end for?

The last two metres are dyed orange through. If you put the leash down or it slips from your hand, you find it again faster. It also shows you how much leash you still have in reserve while you work.

How do I care for an oiled-leather tracking leash?

With leather grease, applied thinly and left to soak in. Wipe off coarse dirt dry beforehand. On brown leather grease marks are barely visible, so you can work over the whole length. No hot water, no soap, no radiator.

What if the seam comes loose or the leather stretches?

Oiled leather gives a little under load — after the first few searches the leash hangs slightly longer than it did at the start. We can open the hand seam and set it again. Repairs are done on request: write to us describing what you see and send the leash in.
