Tracking wounded game places very different demands on a collar from conventional fieldwork. When following a wounded animal over several hundred metres — or even kilometres — often for hours and across constantly changing terrain, the dog may work under continuous tension on the blood tracking lead, focused on the scent with its nose close to the ground.
A blood tracking collar must be designed to meet these demands in every detail: in its materials, construction and, above all, in the comfort it provides for the dog.
As blood tracking is carried out by dogs of very different breeds and builds — from the small, agile Dachshund to powerful scent hounds and pointing breeds — our leather blood tracking collars are available in widths ranging from 3 cm to 5.6 cm.
For our blood tracking collars, we use the same robust vegetable-tanned oiled leather as for our other hunting dog collars.
Blood tracking places particular emphasis on two qualities: strength and long-term dimensional stability. Unlike a collar worn for a short daily walk, a blood tracking collar may remain under sustained tension for hours while the dog works on a long tracking lead.
The leather therefore needs to remain stable while retaining enough suppleness to move comfortably with the dog. Our oiled leather combines these qualities, creating a durable collar designed for regular and demanding use in the field.
One small detail can make a considerable difference when working a long blood tracking lead: the swivel to which the lead is attached.
Over hours of tracking through changing terrain, a long lead will inevitably turn and twist. A freely rotating swivel helps prevent the lead from becoming unnecessarily twisted, allowing the dog and handler to work more smoothly.
For this reason, our blood tracking collars are fitted exclusively with solid brass swivels. Robust and resistant to corrosion, brass is particularly well suited to regular exposure to moisture, mud and demanding field conditions.
The result is a reliable connection between collar and tracking lead — designed for controlled, uninterrupted handling when concentration matters.
Blood tracking can take considerably longer than many other forms of hunting work, making comfort particularly important.
Our blood tracking collars are therefore padded to provide a broad, comfortable contact surface around the dog’s neck. The padding helps distribute the tension of the tracking lead over a larger area and reduces concentrated pressure during prolonged work.
With widths ranging from 3 cm for smaller breeds such as Dachshunds to 5.6 cm for larger, powerfully built tracking dogs, you can choose a collar with proportions suited to your individual dog.
Alongside the appropriate width, you can choose your blood tracking collar from a selection of carefully considered colours.
Cognac and dark brown offer a timeless, understated appearance, while olive reflects the traditional character of hunting equipment. Orange provides a striking contrast and greater visual presence in dense undergrowth or low-light conditions.
This allows you to choose a combination that suits both your dog and your preferred style in the field.
On request, your blood tracking collar can be personalised with laser engraving, for example with your phone number or your dog’s name.
Rather than adding a separate metal identification plate, the information is engraved directly into the leather. This creates a discreet and permanent form of personalisation without adding another component that could interfere with demanding work in dense terrain.
Like all our collars, every Bolleband blood tracking collar is individually handcrafted in our Hamburg workshop.
From selecting and cutting the leather to assembling the padding, swivel and hardware, each stage is completed with careful attention to detail.
For a piece of equipment expected to perform reliably over hours of tracking and many kilometres in the field, meticulous craftsmanship is not simply a finishing touch — it is fundamental to the design.
